Vaser Liposuction

What is involved with Vaser treatment - in brief?

[Click photo to view]

The Vaser Ultrasonic Liposuction treatments are carried out in a properly equipped theatre, the area to be treated is sterilised and draped. A walk-in-walk-out procedure under a special local anaesthetic known as tumescent anaesthesia is used to numb the area to be treated and is injected into the fat with a special technique. Then small incisions in the skin are made. The ultrasonic probes are inserted and the process begins. An average procedure takes one to one and a half hours. Afterwards suction is used to remove the fat which has been liquidized or broken down into tiny fragments. This suction is a more passive process to conventional liposuction, as the ultrasound technology has performed the hard work needed.

How long does the Vaser treatment take?

You should set aside the whole day for this procedure to take into account travelling time, arrival at the clinic and photography. However the actual procedure for a single area is usually under one hour from the time you go into theatre.

Who is suitable? Who benefits most?

Fit and healthy individuals with stubborn local deposits. This is not a treatment for obesity or very large areas.

What areas can be treated with Vaser?

Most areas can be treated. Dr Brookes will advise you if you are better suited for this or for Smartlipo. The following areas are more likely to benefit from ultrasound than laser:

  • Male abdomen
  • Male love handles
  • Larger female love handles
  • Medium sized female abdomen - Ie. more than two to three fistfuls needing treatment
  • Flanks - the sides
  • Muffin tops
  • Saddle Bags
  • Inner Thighs and Knees
  • Bingo wings
  • Some larger chin types

Who is not suitable for Vaser treatment?

  • Clinically obese, diffuse fatty deposits.
  • On warfarin or aspirin or any anticoagulants
  • Medical conditions such as heart problems, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, neurological problems.
  • Local scarring
  • Hernias in area to be treated
  • Unrealistic expectations - want/expect perfect results
  • Those with much loose skin may need surgery after excessive weight loss or very bad stretch marks

How long do I wear a special compression garment (corset)?

The garment needs to be worn immediately after the procedure for ONE week continuously. We would advise you plan one week off work or work at home.

There after you will wear the garment for twelve hours during the day for six to twelve weeks. For abdominal treatments in particular the garment needs to be worn as close to 24/7 as possible after the first week (i.e. shower only and reapply). If you have stretch-marks, an overlap or loose skin you may have to wear it for three to four months. If you have loose skin on the abdomen you will have to wear it for the full duration.

If your skin is good and elastic and it is just love handles or smaller saddlebags you may only need to wear it for four to six weeks after the initial week.

Seepage from wound sites.

There is quite a lot of fluid seepage from the incision sites. This is not of concern but can be quite significant for two to three days. This is fatty fluid and some serum and a little blood. It will settle quickly and is not dangerous but is inconvenient and messy.

We will provide you with a suitable well fitting garment and fit you in after the procedure. You can purchase further garments if you wish through the clinic or at macom-medical.com.

I would like some sedation and to be less aware of the surroundings for the Vaser procedure

If you feel very nervous about being completely awake during your VASER procedure it can be arranged for you to have sedation for the duration of the procedure.

Sedation can take place in two ways:

   a) an oral tablet of Diazepam (Valium) is sufficient for the majority of people. Please note that most people do not need any sedation. This is called "conscious sedation"

   b) the sedation administered into the vein is carried out by an expert anaesthetist and you will be medically monitored throughout.

There will be an additional anaesthetic fee.

We are the first (and currently only) UK facility to offer this for VASER at the Guildford Hospital Nuffield Health.

Please note this is a specialist procedure. Sedation is "conscious" (i.e. drowsy but rousable) and not deep and it is not a General Anaesthetic where you are completely asleep.

You can be discharged later that day.

You must be accompanied by a responsible adult and not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after.

What will happen on the day of treatment

We advise you to set the whole day aside. It is better to come with a friend or partner. You will need a driver home, especially if you live outside of the area.

Once the local anaesthetic wears off you may be uncomfortable and need painkillers. You must not drive having taken codeine pain killers

We do like you to eat a breakfast if your procedure is in the morning or lunch if it is in the afternoon. Do not skip a meal as you will feel light-headed.

Do come on time. We will take photographs and mark you up. The theatre nurse will see you before and take your blood pressure. We check the paper work and answer any last minute questions you may be concerned about.

How about the after care

  • Antibiotic cover after is needed
  • Paracetomol for painkillers is usually enough
  • Minimal or no vigorous exercise for 2 weeks
  • We will see you at 2 weeks after procedure for a check-up.
  • We will need to see you urgently IF you feel unwell, faint, abnormal swelling or notice any burns.

You will need to take about one week off work for moderate sized areas or a minimum of three days for a small area. You must wear a corset - which we provide - continuously for one week. The corset is snug but not tight and most people quite like it!

You will have to wear the corset for a minimum of six weeks, twelve hours per day thereafter. If you have lax skin you make have to wear the corset for twelve weeks to help the skin fully retract. The corset is a very important part of your aftercare.

We will advise you on this.

You will not be able to do strenuous exercise for at least two weeks.
You are likely to need moderately strong painkillers in the first one to five days which we will provide on a prescription.

You will need a course of antibiotics and painkillers which will be provided on a private prescription.

Reviews?

We will review you at one, six and fourteen weeks on average.

When will I see a result?

You should see an immediate improvement and the full effect at six to twelve weeks.

What can go wrong?

Burns from the incision sites, bruising, bleeding, lumpiness, some skin laxity if the skin was lax to start off with. Those with unrealistic expectations may be disappointed. Your goals will be discussed at consultation. About 70,000 procedures have been performed to date with no serious complications reported.
