Radiofrequency is the latest technology to tackle face and body areas in need of rejuvenation. After careful consideration of all the systems available on the market Viridian medical has chosen Accent RF. Safe and affordable, the vast majority of clients treated to date since November 2007 have given very positive feedback as to its results. For those of you seeking improvement without needles or an incision this may be for you. Indeed as a skin tightening treatment alone Accent appears to be superior to Smartlipo ® (observation based).

The Accent system has both Unipolar and Bipolar modalities. It can be uncomfortable at times and for facial treatments, so application of local anaesthetic crème will help you through the procedure. The operator has complete control of the procedure and can cool the skin immediately when required. However, a treatment time from twenty-five to forty-five minutes is to be expected per area. It is essential to maintain skin temperature once it is achieved to get a result. Many clients have reported changes early on after two or even one Accent treatment but it is usual to have four to six (or even eight if the area is particularly challenging) for a full course. We suggest four to start and be flexible regarding the other two.

Accent RF (made by Alma Lasers; see www.almalasers.com) is completely non-invasive and is performed in a clinic or outpatient setting. Taking about thirty to fifty minutes per treatment area. The technology works by heating up the skin, the dermis in particular, to 42 degrees for six to nine minutes per area, using a rolling probe emitting RF waves. This changes the collagen formation and encourages fibroblast migration and laying down of new collagen, with skin remodelling taking place over months and lasting about two years. (A face lift lasts five to seven years). Some people only have issues with skin laxity, eg the face or on the abdomen after childbirth or weight loss, and not always with fatty tissue excess.

In addition the RF wave passes about 2cm into the fatty skin layer causing breakdown of the fat membrane, so fat is released and picked up by the lymphatic system and disposed of by the liver for excretion. Thus cellulite and body contouring can be improved but one has to be realistic about the expectations. It is more about sculpting than weight loss eg Nora Batty won’t have legs like Claudia Schiffer after even 100 treatments!!

There is definite warmth of the skin, with occasional discomfort, but burning is avoided by the moving of a unipolar and then bipolar probe that is hand operated. The skin tightening effect lasts about two years. The fact the treatment is staged over weeks rather than a one off adds credence to the technology.

Accent RF is great for the face, chin line, slack jaw-line and full body, the abdomen, saddle bags, thighs, bingo wings etc. etc. It has FDA approval for the eye-lids as well.

Usually four to six. Re assess at four and be flexible about the remaining two. in some areas eight may be needed if cellulite is particularly deep or skin lax.

There are no limits to the age group spectrum. Some clients have obvious ageing from mid thirties, others do better with deeper lines and laxity not evident until their fifties. There is an advantage to starting a little younger (the forties) and planning an annual budget for maintenance.

Dr Brookes will see you at consultation to gauge the best treatment plan for you, what is suitable and safe and fits your budget. However, due to demand on the clinics Dr Brookes cannot carry out all the Accent treatments. She has trained two practitioners to her own protocols and standards, and will be available to discuss your progress. The practitioners will perform the body areas and some facial area treatment. This will be discussed with you at consultation.

Combination therapy will give optimum non-surgical results
Accent RF can be used after Smartlipo® to tighten up an area that we predict may need further tightening afterwards - eg the neck or abdomen, or if there is residual cellulite. This should be discussed at consultation stage.
